The short answer: Coral Island (Koh Hae) is close, shallow and easy. The Racha Islands are far, clearer and better for marine life. If you are short on time and want a beach, Coral Island makes sense. If you want the best snorkeling near Phuket and can give a full day, choose Racha.
| Coral Island | Racha Islands | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | About 3 km offshore, 15 to 20 minutes by speedboat from Chalong Pier or Rawai | Roughly 22 to 37 km offshore, about 1.5 hours out and about 1 hour back by yacht on our tour |
| Time needed | A short crossing | A full day on our tour |
| Water | Shallow and calm | Clearer, with more variety |
| Reef | One travel guide notes anchor damage and bleaching near the main beach, with healthier coral at the smaller beach | Racha Noi has some of Phuket’s clearest water and healthiest coral |
| Crowds | Busiest from about 10:30 to 13:00, when several tour groups overlap | Fewer boats, because of the distance |
| Beach time | Yes, it is a beach island | No. Everything is done from the yacht |
Coral Island details are from the Nomado Travel Coral Island guide. We do not run a Coral Island trip, so please check current conditions with whoever you book with.
We do not run a Coral Island trip. If you want an easier, closer and more casual day than Racha, the trip we would point you to is our Khai Islands tour, which is shallower and closer. If you want the clearer water and more marine life, see our Racha Island Snorkeling & Yacht tour, and check the weather guide for the best months.
For a short, easy trip with a beach, yes. For reef quality and marine life, the Racha Islands are the better snorkeling.
No. Everyone on the Racha tour must be able to swim with a life vest on.
Racha, because of the distance. Coral Island is busiest from about 10:30 to 13:00, when several tour groups overlap, and quieter earlier and later.
